About me
I spent a number of years doing lab research on the immune response to respiratory viruses as I earned my PhD in Immunology and Microbiology. As I was looking for a post-doc research position, I realized two things. First, writing about the research was as fun and interesting to me as thinking about and doing the research. And secondly, there actually was this career called science writing that would let me constantly learn about new subjects and write about them for curious people with a variety of backgrounds. Science writing clearly was for me. To make the transition, I spent a valuable year earning a master's in science writing at the John Hopkins University Writing Seminars in Baltimore.
It was that year that hooked me on Baltimore, and it has been home ever since. I've written for kids and adults, in print and online. I'm fortunate to spend a portion of my time as a government contractor writing scientific manuscripts in collaboration with some ophthalmic genetics investigators at the National Eye Institute, detailing the eye complications of very rare genetic diseases.
Recently I've developed an interest in the relatively unknown fat disorders lipedema and Dercum's disease. I've just finished editing a book about lipedema diagnosis and treatment for clinicians that was developed in a collaboration between the THE FRIEDMAN CENTER FOR LYMPHEDEMA RESEARCH & TREATMENT and The Lipedema Project.
